The career path
One starts as a junior test engineer and do majorly manual testing, developing test scripts. Prior knowledge of testing life cycle comes in handy here.
Next, level is that of a test engineer. Usually 2-3 yrs. experienced candidates, who are expected to write automated and manual test scripts.
Then comes senior test engineer 3-4 yrs, who work independently, are responsible for peer assessment and guide junior test engineers.
Team lead 5-6 yrs. is responsible for small team, targets and timely deliveries.
The test managers, usually 7-10 yrs. of experience are expected to handle multiple team leads, consolidate the progress and assess the achievement of entry and exit criteria.
Last are the project managers, above 10 yrs, whose main responsibility is to guide & direct all phases of projects.
